Backlinks are a highly important and necessary part of any successful website. Backlinks are essential for Search Engine Optimization (Manchester SEO) because they help to judge the popularity and importance of the website based on their backlinks to other sites. That is the main reason there are so many directories online. One well known directory is the Canadian Business Directory. Ca that is well known for accepting Canadian only businesses. You get listed and you get a backlink, simple as that.
Search engines use a number of standard criteria to rate sites on the web and backlinking is high on the list. Backlinks are actually rated by the various search engines by keywords and the content of the backlinked sites.
For example, if your site is about how to cook a hamburger, you would do better by linking to a site about recipes or food preparation than by linking to a site about downhill luging. Why? Because search engines actually cross check the content of not only the link, but the actual sites the link is connecting so they (search engines) can make sure the webmaster is not trying to gain higher Manchester SEO by doing things like running several unrelated sites at the same time and linking them together, using hidden links, or using automatically generated pages.
Backlinking is an effective way to generate website visits, but you have to understand that you site will not become popular overnight. Backlinking is a way of getting that needed traffic to your site and you have to do it correctly and smartly.
A great way to achieve visits is by linking to other similar or related sites to yours. For instance, lets use the hamburger example again. Sites you would want to link to would be sites for frying pans, barbeques, or sites that are associated with growing the cows.
By doing this, the search engines will pick up on the fact that you are using quality links that fit into the area of your sites expertise.
Another way to create strong backlinks is through hyperlinks. When you are creating your hyperlinks, dont simply put Qlick here, use Visit the tips page for hints on how to make the best hamburger. This will ensure your links are using the same terms as your site and those you backlink to.
If your business is in Canada then submit your web site to this Canadian Directory to improve your backlinks.

Today, no one can deny the importance of backlinks in Search Engine Optimization, especially in Google Optimization. In this article, you can find some solutions for the goal of 50 backlinks with PageRank greater than 2 for new websites. When this goal is archived, I'm totally sure that the pagerank of your website will be boosted to at least 3 in the next update of Google.

There are two main solutions for this goal:
– Finding links on our own, not spending money.
– Buying text links (backlinks).

1. Finding links on our own, not spending money

*Methods in this solution include:
– Find relevant, quality websites and request for link exchanges.
– Submit to quality directories.
– Submit testimonials on websites where you have purchased any services or products.
– Write articles or posts to submit to other websites, blogs, press and forums.

*Pros in this solution:
– No money.
– Robust, stationary links.
– Accepted by search engines.

*Cons in this solution:
– More time and efforts.
– Two-way links (reciprocal links).
– Difficult to determine the time to achieve goal.

*References for this solution:
– Link Exchange programs: linkalizer.com, linkmarket.net, freelinkcentral.com
– Automatic link exchange programs: belinked.info, onewaytextlinks.com, build-reciprocal-links.com, linkdash.com
– Quality Directories: businesspages.org, a2z-free.com, alphabiz.org
– Article Directories: goarticles.com, articlealley.com, article99.com, ezinearticles.com

*Tips:
– You can find more sites for link exchange from studying your competitors' link popularity. Use search engines to perform this check, the keyword in many cases is: link:your_competitor_url.
– When visiting some directories, pay attention to Directory category. You may find the others directories there. For example, in Directory category of businesspages.org, you can find some other good Australian directories.

*Estimated time: 2 months

2. Buying text links

*Methods in this solution include:
– Buy text links (backlinks) directly from sites (in case they don't accept link exchanges)
– Buy text links from text link brokers.
– Buy text links from link auction sites.
– Pay fee to be included in big, quality directories (Yahoo, Overture, LookSmart…)

*Pros in this solution:
– Less time and efforts to get links.
– One-way links (better than reciprocal links)

*Cons in this solution
– Money. We must pay fee every month (or year) for some links.
– Buying text links (many in the same time) from text link brokers isn't encouraged by search engines. They can penalize us.
– Some links are volatile (not permanent).

*References for this solution:
– Advertising on sites: iwebtool.com/pagerank_checker (PR5 – $10.00 per month)
– Text link brokers: textlinkbrokers.com (5 Permanent Links PR0 PR4: $175 /month), textlinkpopularity.com (10 Links from PR 3 Pages: $150 – Pay only once for permanent links – no recurring charges)
– Link auction sites: linkadage.com
– Big, quality directories: Yahoo! Directory (1 link – $299/year – your site will be reviewed first)

*Tips:
– When buying links from brokers, be sure that you can preview the pages in which your link will be included. Besides the PageRank, there are other factors to take into consideration such as: relevant links in this page, how many links in that page, whether your link is static, …

*Estimated time: 1 week (some directories need more time to review our request)

3. Conclusion:
It seems that the goal of 50 backlinks with PageRank greater than 2 for new websites is not an easy one. Improving link popularity is a long, patient but obligatory process. It's up to you to decide which solution is better or the combination of these two ones.

Three or four years ago a massive link trading campaign could get your site to the top of the Search Engine Rankings (SERPs). However, things are changing quickly concerning reciprocal links. Companies like LinkAdage [ http://www.linkadage.com] are receiving increased reports that reciprocal links are becoming a less effective part of Leeds SEO. In fact, it now seems sites that go overboard with reciprocal link campaigns are getting penalized in the SERPs by having most of their reciprocal links completely ignored by the search engines.

Adding to the problem are the Link Exchange Networks that are popping up all over the web that put websites at risks associated with being part of an artificial linking network. Remember, any link network scheme is only as strong as its weakest link. It is to your advantage to stay away from these link exchange network schemes, programs, or clubs if you want to keep the search engines happy. If your dead set on trading links, do your trades one-on-one with other webmasters and not through some multi-level like link trading scheme. Remember, if you participate in an artificial link exchange network, one slight algorithm adjustment can knock all the participating sites out of the search index in one swoop.

Websites should have no more than 15% reciprocal or traded links. The key ingredient to Leeds SEO linkage strategy is to make your backlink structure look natural. Websites with huge amounts of reciprocal backlinks and few one-way links are clearly trying to game the search engines and todays search engines algorithms are smart enough to spot and penalize these websites by potentially ignoring all of their reciprocal links. If you have gone too far with your reciprocal linking program, you are at risk of those links simply not being counted. This makes it extremely important to only use reciprocal links in moderation.

If you read any of the major search engine forums, you will see lots of threads about established websites that have been top 10 in the SERPs for years, suddenly dropping to the top 100 without making any changes. I have had the privilege of studying many of the affected sites, and the common denominator seems to be an over reliance on reciprocal linking programs. We believe that reciprocal links that formally counted as real backlinks are now being seen for what they are links traded to game the search engine algorithms. If a website passes the 20% reciprocal link threshold, there is a very real danger that all of its reciprocal links will be discounted. The effect of this can be a disastrous drop in the SERPs. It seems many websites that have thousands of reciprocal links suddenly are only being credited for a handful of natural links they have accumulated over the years.

So what can you do?

If your website currently ranks well but relies heavily on reciprocal links to achieve its good rankings, now is the time to start figuring out a strategy to increase your percentage of one-way links to reciprocal links ratio. Here are a few simple things you can do to achieve this goal:

** Offer something on your site that inspires other webmasters to link to your website
** Write articles for content hungry sites in exchange for a link to your website
** Eliminate any cross-linking between your own sites
** Delete some of your reciprocal links to garbage websites
** Delete reciprocal links to totally unrelated websites
** Delete any reciprocal links received though participation in an artificial link network scheme.
** Start buying one-way links from related websites

Analyzing your competition is a good place to start when optimizing your web site for search engine placement. Leeds SEO or search engine optimization is about topping your competition. By looking first at web sites that rank high for your key word phrases you will have an understanding of the time and cost involved to have high rankings in the search engines. If you are going after a competitive keyword phrase the amount of time involved will dramatically increase.

When analyzing the competition, search for your keyword phrase or phrases in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Look at the top sites and especially look at the sites that rank high in all three of the major search engines. You now have a list of competitor web sites; these are your targets to pick off one by one.

Check your competitors backlinks or links to them from other web sites; this is going to be the best indicator of how much effort you are going to have to put into your search engine optimization project. You can check backlinks in Google and MSN by typing link:www.yourdomain.com. In Yahoo you would type link:http://www.yourdomain.com. Yahoo also has a special command that will show you all the links to an entire web site. This can be done by typing linkdomain:www.yourdomain.com. Now you can see all the links to the home page and sub-pages in a web site. The linkdomain command is the most helpful when evaluating links. Be sure to check links in all three major search engines so you do not miss anything. Also check backlinks on competitors sub-pages. You will not need as many deep links but this can make a big difference when trying to get a keyword to rank on a sub page.

When evaluating your competitors links, keep in mind that this can be a link source for your web site. See if the web sites linking to your competitors accept web site link submissions. When submitting to other sites use your keyword phrase for your anchor text when ever possible.

Using the Google toolbar can be helpful too when evaluating links. Google assigns each page a page rank score based on a 1 to 10 scale with 10 being the highest. Do not solely look at a pages page rank score; it is better that the page be on topic rather than an irrelevant topic and a high score.

Next look at the competitors title tags; are they using keywords in the tag? Be sure to check the keywords tag and description tag – I always find good keywords this way. There are some great free Leeds SEO tools on the internet that will automate these processes. Just do a search for free Leeds SEO tools and you will have a lot of tools with different and unique features for your needs.

Links are very important but if you are smart you will not need as many to beat out the competition. Build your inbound links slow and steady, and from a variety of sources. Make sure to use your keyword phases in your anchor text and vary the text for some of the links. This will appear natural to the search engines and should help you to avoid over optimization or spam penalties. If you are trying to acquire one hundred inbound links to your web site, space your acquisitions out over a three month period or longer. One hundred backlinks appearing all at once looks very unnatural especially if you do not keep building backlinks at that rate. Make sure you have well written relevant content. When optimizing your web site stay with in all search engine guidelines. The guidelines will give you a good idea of what and what not to do for you web site to rank well in the search engines. You do not want all your hard work to go to waste because of an over aggressive tactic or simple mistake that is outside of the search engine guidelines.

Participating In London SEO Contests? Then You Have To Think Of A Well Structured Strategy To Win!

In normal niches the competition is not as killing as in London SEO contests, well… except for the search engine optimization niche off coarse. But to be the best in an London SEO contest you don’t always have to have a big wallet, or a huge network of authority websites. You can also win with a good strategy, and good London SEO tactics.

The number one for the search engine contest keyword phrase is always the one everybody is focused upon. And everything that page does is being duplicated by hundreds of people. And that’s not what you want, do you? You want to win by surprise. The best way is off course hitting the first spot a day before the end of the contest. But how can you do that? Well I’ll explain it to you.

First of all you need to get yourself indexed, get some low pagerank backlinks from some link directories or something. This is to know your position in the contest, once you rank at a spot for the specific key phrase you kind of know how hard it is going to be, if you rank on the first 3 pages of Google the competition isn’t that hard. But if you rank at the tenth page it’s going to be a little more difficult.

The next thing is to use your network of websites. You can do that by placing a link from each website to your contest page. But if you have many websites and many pages on those websites, it can trigger a Google penalty, and you don’t want that in the contest. What you also can do is creating a page on every website you own and link to that page from all the pages within the website. You will get high valuable links with a lot of weight because the links are on topic.

Another tip from me is try to rank high with a handicap. If you screw up your on page optimization and you can rank high, you can give a final boost to your ranking by doing some on page optimization right before the contest ends.

And off coarse do what I’m doing now: write articles. This is almost the most important thing in London SEO, writing articles about the subject. This article is about London SEO contests, and it would never been written if i never participated in the pvmultimedia London SEO contest. Also like you see above, you can put anything in your article, so put your targeted keywords in it for the contest. You can see I’m doing that as well, I wrote down the words pvmultimedia London SEO contest because those are the contest keywords.

And if you write a lot of articles you have to submit them to ezinarticles.com and other big article directories, they will be all over the web in no-time. All organic backlinks from highly optimized content related web pages from all around the globe, all different ip addresses, all with the one link you prefer, all one way links. This is the way to be the best, not money, no networks just be smart and stay out of sight.

Perception Is Everything – See How Google Is Slapping People About Pagerank

This article was written in a simple language so you can learn on how google is manipulating the pagerank. Pay attention.

Recently Google did a major PageRank update where a lot of sites were downgraded. Many experts believe this PageRank update was Google’s response to link selling – sites which sell links lost points in their PageRank.

Google measures all web pages on a scale of importance from 0 to 10, which is shown in a small green pixel bar on browsers carrying the Google Toolbar. PageRank is “supposedly” measured by the number of backlinks to your site.

Online democracy in action, a link is a vote for your site. The more votes you have the higher your site is ranked. At least that’s how it was supposed to work until a lot of high PR sites started selling links and put a monkey wrench into the whole system.

The latest update may be a smart move on Google’s part to curtail this practice; who’s going to buy a link from a PR2 or even a PR4 site? Besides this could be more than a warning that your site will go down even further if you continue to sell links.

Now this is more of a cosmetic change in PageRank than a real change in your true rankings in Google. Just because your PR goes down doesn’t mean your keyword rankings or traffic from Google also goes down.

I saw some of my sites go up, some stayed the same, but my major site took a big hit – falling from PR6 to PR4. This was more of a devastating blow than I expected mainly for psychological reasons than actual consequences. After years of building the best content you can muster and constantly getting quality one-way links, to see that PageRank drop was very disappointing and hits to the core of your online work.

Google sometimes just slap you at the face without any apparent reason. but lets keep it up.

I have been around for a while so I have experienced many Google Updates – anyone remember the Florida Update? I also keep my ears peeled to discussions of the latest updates in Webmasterworld and Stompernet, and I even read Matt Cutts when I get real nervous… so I knew not to panic just because of the sudden drop in PageRank.

I also knew what most of the Birmingham SEO experts were saying was true because my major keywords stayed the same and my Google traffic actually went up. But that’s little comfort when you’re talking about Google; you immediately go into overdrive and try to figure out where you went wrong. What caused the drop – because whether PageRank is meaningless or not, you’re still going in the wrong direction.

I saw many of my competitors drop too, but many stayed the same and even a few increased in PageRank. What are they doing right; what am I doing wrong? I don’t sell links but does Google think I am selling links was my main concern? I even moved one external link from my main page to another part of my site, just in case Google is mistaking that as a paid link.

Welcome to webmaster’s paranoid hell! Well, i believe that every webmaster has becamed paranoid about google one day.

For Birmingham SEO reasons I have very few external links on my main page. Can’t see why Google downgraded my main site. I have been at PR6 for years.

Herein lies my main beef, with Google you never really know where you stand; you are constantly walking on eggshells. No matter how good your content or your site is – one misstep and you could be in the doghouse. All your hard work can be taken away in a heartbeat.

It wouldn’t matter so much if it was one of the other two major search engines downgrading your site but this is Google.

Free organic traffic from Google is vital to any online site or business. I would take traffic from Google over any other source of traffic on the web, except for traffic coming from my articles on other sites, and even that traffic probably originated from a search in Google.

Google and Google PageRank have always been important to me – that’s one of the reasons a sudden large drop causes so much concern. There’s another important reason Google PageRank is important to me.

Most Birmingham SEO experts mistakenly believe PageRank is meaningless because Google is not giving us the true ranking of any site or revealing all the backlinks, which is supposedly one of the major factors in how Google ranks sites. While this fact is obviously true, it has caused many to jump to another conclusion.

Because Google is not giving us the real ranking, many webmasters have dismissed PageRank as a vital element in their sites. Don’t make the same mistake.

Google PageRank is extremely important if you’re doing business on the web. The higher PR you have, the better. But it has nothing to do with keyword rankings or first page SERPs.

What many Birmingham SEO experts fail to realize (not really their business) is the whole “perceived” value of PageRank.

Google, hate it or love it, has become the most respected company on the web in the eyes of the majority of the web’s users. It carries enormous weight and prestige. The “perceived” value of a high PR7 or PR8 is extremely valuable.

We are not talking about link selling; we are talking about how a perspective business partner or customer will treat your site or business.

Say you have two identical sites you want to do business with online and you discover one is a Google PR2 site and the other is a Google PR8 site – which one would you choose to do business with? Honestly?

From first-hand experience, I know any online company or marketer will get more business offers and be offered more partnerships/joint ventures if you have a high Google PR site than a low one. It will make a difference to your bottom line.

PageRank is important. PageRank has meaning. Even if it has little bearing on your SERPs rankings or Google traffic, PageRank can greatly influence the success of your online site or venture. Don’t ignore or dismiss PageRank as a meaningless relic that didn’t quite work out as Google had planned for it in the first place.

High PageRank will always be valuable.

The day Google gives its own site a PageRank of PR1 or PR2 instead of the current PR10 – that’s the day you can dismiss PageRank as truly meaningless.

Powerful and Effective Link Building Catapult Your Search Engine Rankings

One of the most powerful aspects of Search Engine Optimization is link building. Proper link building for the purpose of rankings uses Targeting Links. Targeting Links are one of the most effective approaches, as the links pass PageRank, and are already proven to rank your competitors. The Old School terminology for this approach is called Stealing your competitors rankings.

Top Leeds SEO Companies use this method when developing top-tier marketing strategies for their clients and even their own websites. It is also the most time consuming approach to link building, but it is one of the most powerful methods of producing results.

Define your keyword targets:
Each and every link you build needs to have a keyword target when using this approach. Target a single keyword first. See whos ranking in the top ten on your favorite Search Engine (SE) for this keyword or keyword phrase. All of those sites contain your link targets. The sites that link to them, their backlinks, are more powerful than any link that is built for the sole purpose of link popularity. These are targeted links and have much more power to rank websites. Now the keyword that these sites rank for is the Anchor Text that you want to use on your link on these targeted websites.

Now that we have your keyword target, we need to consider whether the link is really a quality link, or a spam site. Determining this is harder for the layman than the experienced marketer as some sites that show in the backlinks are obvious spammers or websites that are trying to make a buck from Pay Per Click advertising. As a general rule these have low or no PageRank (PageRank 0/10), and always have a ton of ads first. Ignore these links, as they will be temporary or detrimental to this process. Finding the quality websites in your competitors backlinks is very important. You need to weed out the garbage.

Choose the websites that have some PageRank and appear to be quality sites, if you find some sites in common when checking backlinks on multiple competitors, then those are the important links, and you should do whatever you have to do to get a link from it. Consider a reciprocal if all else fails.

Now the hard part, how do you get your link on their page next to your competitor? How can you get the link to you without returning it? Since everyone is so link popularity aware, you need to present a quality proposal to the webmaster to gain a link. You need to be a quality addition for the webmaster to want to add the link. Nowadays, its rare that any site will give a link without returning one. In 1999 before the Link Popularity Search Engines, this was not the case, webmasters linked to whoever they wanted to and paid no attention to reciprocal link exchanges. So how can we get a link without returning one?

Heres a smart approach. For any link that you are targeting, you really need to try and attempt to offer the webmaster a real reason on why he should add the link. Proving that your website is a valuable resource and one-of-a-kind, is a possible way to still get a free link, and a free targeted link is a powerful link. One-way links are important for any site as it is the model of the Authority Domains. These sites have hundreds to thousands of one-way links, and very few if any reciprocal links. So you should try through whatever methods of one-way link building that you want to use, to get these targeted links without reciprocating. But a reciprocal link is better than no link.

Combine this method with blind link building (random reciprocals links), press releases and even article writing (like this one) and your site will achieve better rankings, better traffic and if your site is truly effectiveit will prosper.

You buy a domain name, get your website up and running. So what now? Well you could just sit back and do nothing. Or you could start to market your website and get the word around about your new website and what you offer. So were to start and what to do and not to do when you start to market your site.

Link DirectorysWe will start by submitting your website to link directorys.Find as many free link directorys and you can not one or two but hundreds,Submit your website to all of them remember to add your keywords in the title and description of the submission info.Directorys are a great sorce of backlinks and traffic you can start by submitting your website to our very-own Directory this will get you started in your directory submissions.

ArticlesArticles are allso a great way to get your site noticed,Write a detailed article about your site and what you offer place your keywords in the article and a link to your site,Now you can submit your site to some free blogs or paid blogs,Choose blogs with high Pagerank even if you have to pay as the high Pagerank means that the blog owners have a large number of backlink to there site and thus will have good traffic,Make your articke long and dont insert to many links as most Blog owners limit the ammount of links in each submited article.

ForumsForums can bring visitors to your website,Join a few good forums place your link in your profile signiture and post in the forums,do not spam the forums as that will only get you banned. Search Eingines visit forums more than the average website and more frequently so your site will get indexed and gain link with your signiture if you use the forum correctly and follow there rules.

Link ExchangeExchange links with other websites.Relivant Links are the best links this means try to exchange links with websites simaler to yours,Use keywords in you exchange This is called anchor text(Example) if your selling A certain product on your website lets say (remote control cars) In your link exchange use that keyword but remember to change your keyword frequently when you exchange links if you keep using the same anchor text in links google will look at this as spam so change your anchor text after around ten links, then use a different keyword,You can allways go back to the same keyword in your anchor text at a later time as google will not class this as spam.

Irelivent linksSome so called Leeds SEO experts will tell you not to link to irelivent websites,This is not true A link is a link at the end of the day but relivent links will have more waight in Leeds SEO than irelivent links and put your site up the ranks faster,However irelivent link will not hurt your site in the slightest,We all know that they will not get you up the ranks faster but they may bring traffic to your website and traffic means sales we wont get anywere without traffic,So dont be put of if the link is not relivent to your website.

Search Engine SubmissionIf you have done all the above then there is no need to submit your new website to the top search engines like google, aol, msn. However there are thousands of other search engines that dont visit these sites on a regular basis. So how do we find these other search engines.this is were we call in some help find a good Search engine submission service website as these sites will have all the other little search engines in there database so they will submit your website for you,When i say little that dosent mean that this will not be in your best intrest as it will,All the smaller search engines will bring you a great number of traffic. To date we have over one million search engines in our datsbase and will submit your website to them all.

Dontdont,Spam your keywords in one go change frequently

dont,Spam forums

dont,Submit your website to search engines to constantly let them find you and use a good service once every six months to submit to all the ones you cant find

Dont Be scared to exchange links with irelivent websites

Follow my tips And enjoy wour website

Links For (Search Engine Optimization) London SEO – Part 2

In the previous article on this topic, I covered the main types of links you want to get for your site. On the last part, I will clearly state which types of links to stay away from pursuing, and I will further explain some misconceptions about the good types of links.

Do not do this to your links.
(1) Placing a form on your site and then allowing anyone to add a link to your site using an automated process. If you do not manually approve these links, well, you are asking for link problems. Manually approve these links before posting them. What works, takes work

(2) Denying a link based solely on a low or non existing PageRank. What a mistake! PageRank is not only outdated, it is also less relevant that it was in the past. As long as it is related to your site, what really matters here, is that the site your are reviewing is indexed or not. That is the key issue, not its popularity. This also applies outside the regular sites circle, to niche directories, smaller engines, etc.

(3) Sites that exchange links with you, but at a later time they do a nofollow on your link, or they just simply take it down. That is why you need to check your backlinks periodically to verify the status of these links exchanges.

(4) Sites with faked PageRank. Yes, they are all over. The problem is that you are doing an exchange link or buying a link from a site that doesnt have the PageRank they claim to (offending domains use a 301 or 302 redirects that point their sites to sites with a high PageRank) and instead getting your genuine PageRank added to them as a trade, or your money.

Considering link exchanges.
This one is not easy, (see above) but also a good way if done right. How? Well, to start look for sites with lots of quality content that is directly related to yours. In this area, articles that are good introductions to your products or services create an opportunity. Focused on your visitors, look for resource pages that would increase their experience. Look for forums that allow actual links to be passed, as there are lots of then available, especially from authority sites, educational and governmental entities. And last, but not least, look for information paths, in other words, pages that lead visitors to additional information on a product or service.

Article swapping for links.
This one is very good. When you swap articles with a related site in your industry (for the most benefit) plus you add your own comments (preferably in a different color, hint: blue) to the article you are posting on you site (to avoid duplicate content among other things) this allows you to have additional content on your site, plus the immediate benefit of a properly implemented reciprocal link.

This week we discuss the latest Google update, how it might affect your site, and how you can recover if your site lost its position as a result of this update.
The Jagger update started over a month ago and lasted 3 weeks. The update included updating the PageRank of all spidered pages, updating the number of backlinks and most importantly, changing the way Google ranked web sites for any search query. The key features and effects of this update are highlighted below:

How do we know Google is updating its algorithm?

Most algorithm updates, whether on Google, Yahoo!, MSN or any other search engine, are characterised by sudden, drastic and often frequent changes on the search results pages for any search query. During the Jagger update, the folks at Google were kind enough to warn us a few days into the update that we were witnessing an update!

What has happened as a result of the Google Jagger update?

Underneath the superficial changes in search results, the Jagger update has had a serious effect on the way companies use search engine optimization to influence ranks. Numerous search engine optimisation experts have theorized on these effects. The most commonly agreed upon conclusions are:
Search engine optimisation has become more difficult than ever!
Older sites are given more recognition
Authority sites (e.g. BBC, NHS) are given more recognition
Government and Educational institutions are considered more important
Links from authority sites, government and educational institutions count
Older, longer-term inbound links are given more importance
Outbound links to authority sites are considered good
Relevance of links is very important
Sites with more pages containing useful information rank better
Up-to-date content is valued more

How does Google now value reciprocal links?

There are two aspects to consider for reciprocal links. First, Google considers artificial link building with the aim of influencing rank to be a form of spam, and so if it detects unnatural linking patterns, such as links obtained from link farms or link exchanges between irrelevant sites, it will penalize both the sites for this. Second, inbound links are increasingly weighed in importance according to the relevance of the page and the site where the link originates from to the page it is linking to. So, a link from a gambling site to a site about corrective surgery will be considered almost useless. The only type of reciprocal link building that is encouraged is between related companies in an industry e.g. between theatres and ticket agents or between two ticket agents

How do age of site and age of links influence ranking?

Google does not want spam domains to rank high on a results page, make a quick buck out of their top position and then disappear. As a result it imposes ageing delays on domains and now even on links. Sites which have been around for a while will rank higher. What this means from a search engine optimisation point of view is that it will take longer to see results of direct optimisation and it will also take longer to see the results of any link development work. Search engine optimisation work on new sites can take as much as 9 months to start yielding results for competitive keyphrases.

Relevance… of everything!

Google’s success was based on the relevance of the web sites it found for any user query. Therefore it should come as no surprise that their current algorithm goes a few steps further in rewarding relevance … of everything – of inbound and outbound links to and from a site, titles and headings to actual page content, page content to the rest of the site and so on.

Recovering from Jagger

If your site has been affected, go through the list of features of the Jagger update, and check if your site might have been struck due to any one of those changes in the search engine ranking algorithm. Re-optimise your site for the search engines by removing any offending content and links and immerse yourself in obtaining more relevant inbound links.
