While many factors influence the rankings of a web site, any search engine optimization effort isnt worth even a second of your time without one and single unknown: relevant and competitive keywords.

Lets examine an example: a local moving company decided to optimize its website. It knows (or assumes that it does) that the most popular keywords for their type of business are movers and moving. At a first glance, looks like everythings fine: the keywords seem to be relevant, and should produce good results. However, there are two mistakes made here.

The first one is keyword relevancy. Whats the use for our local moving company of people that are looking for movers or moving in Denver, CO, Boston, MA or New York, NY, if they are located and offering services in and around San Francisco only?

Another mistake is keyword effectiveness. Itll take much more time and effort to get top rankings for such popular and competitive general keywords as moving and movers than to get same results for something more specific and relevant, such as movers San Francisco or moving San Francisco. Not only are these keywords more likely to convert visitors to buyers, but also its a much easier and less time-consuming task.

If the world we live in consists of atoms, the smallest and most important particles in search engine optimization world are keywords. In fact, theres nothing complicated about them, if one remembers three things about keywords: relevancy, effectiveness and Wordtracker.

Wordtracker.com is an UK based company that offers an irreplaceable search engine marketing service tool: keyword research and analysis. It helps to find and pick keywords that are both relevant and competitive. Relevant mean that the keywords are related to your website, and that these are the words people are typing in Google, Yahoo or MSN in order to find your kind of business. Another important factor in determining a good keyword is its effectiveness. Lets say we have a keyword movers which has a record of appearing in Google search list for 1009 times; there are 15400000 different web pages competing for this keyword. This means that this keywords effectiveness index is 1009/15400000=0.066. This index shows that the keyword is far too competitive and youll probably end up somewhere in the middle of Googles search results if you try to optimize your webpage for this particular keyword. A rule of thumb is to find keywords that are quite popular and at the same time have fewer webpages competing for them. A good keyword is considered to have an effectiveness index of over 100, although anything in between 10 and 100 can be targeted as well.

Needless to say, without having the right keywords that are both relevant and competitive its impossible to succeed in any search engine optimization campaign. Without knowing your niche words, youll probably end up competing against web sites with thousands of inbound links optimized by search engine optimization gurus and will be lost in millions of search results no one will even ever find out you exist. On the other hand, all it takes to get your web traffic from 0 to couple hundreds a day might be something as simple and cost-effective as Wordtracker.

If you miss the mark, search engine optimization can cost you both a lot of time and money, without getting you the results. However if you do it right, Liverpool SEO WILL improve your internet business.

What IS the goal of search engine optimization?

The goal of search engine optimization is to bring new customers to your web site. Liverpool SEO is about being found by the right people. It’s about matching a prospect with the right offer. It is as simple as that.

What is NOT the goal of search engine optimization?

Liverpool SEO is NOT about getting listed for every possible keyword. This is the biggest mistake that is made by webmasters and web designers. Most people try to get as many high search engine rankings as possible, AND for as many keywords as possible. That is not only a lot of work, it is also a complete waste of time.

It is not important that your web site is listed for a lot of keywords. It is important that your web site is listed for the right keywords, and that your web site then turns visitors into buyers. Without achieving this you will not be successful.

How can YOU improve your search engine optimization results?

1.Create convincing web pages

That really is a very important step. If you do not have web pages that appeal to your target group, then do not bother with trying to get visitors.

Your web pages must be designed so that your visitors become buyers.

2.You must also first create trust, and convince your visitors by making your web pages easy to use.

3.Find the right keywords

You must find the keywords that work best for you, and for your website. Build a keyword lists that is related to your business. There are many Free Keyword Generators that can help you with finding the right keywords for you.

Yahoo offer one here:

http://inventory.overture.com

4.You can then use the keywords that you find in a pay per click (PPC) campaign on say Google’s Adwords, or with Yahoo’s Overture. What this will do is give you a quick way of testing your new keywords. It is also important that you then track these keywords with a conversion tracking tool, which will tell you which keywords lead to sales, and which keywords are just a waste of both time and money.

5.Optimize your web pages for these keywords

Once you know the keywords that lead to conversions, (sales) you should then set about optimizing your web pages for these keywords. While PPC allows you to quickly test keywords, and you can see the results within only a few days, optimizing your web pages allows you to get targeted visitors, WITHOUT you having to pay for them.

Search engine optimization can lead to great results if you concentrate on the right goals. Search engine optimization is about improving your business. It is not about getting as much traffic as possible. Focus on your target group, and on keywords that work best for you. You will save a lot of work while at the same time increasing your profits.

Search engine optimization (Birmingham SEO) is no longer a secret weapon of cutting-edge, web savvy marketers. Even traditional companies have to make sure search engines like Google and Yahoo find them consistently– because search engines are the primary way prospects and influencers learn about products and services.

Too often, companies ignore search optimization or shelve requests for it simply because senior management does not understand it well enough to provide the necessary leadership and support. And if top management does not view it as priority, marketing and sales people are disinclined to pursue it. They will apply traditional, accepted tactics, shying away from one of the most efficient, measurable ways to get in front of prospects.

Too often executives focus on the technical aspects of Birmingham SEO and lose sight of the more important strategic aspects. Meta tags, spiders, hits and visits dont mean much to company stakeholders and shareholders. Resultsin terms of better leads and more of themdo.

Here are a few questions every CMO should ask (and be able to answer):

What do we want our web visitors to do?
Whether your desired response is a demo request or a completed inquiry form, management should know and agree upon this primary action and communicate it to all stakeholders. You may have a few different actions that you wish to track.

How many search visitors per month actually do what we want them to do?
Since we are only talking about Birmingham SEO in this article, we are only interested in search visitors. Knowing this number now and tracking it each month, will give you quick insight into the quality and quantity of your search traffic. Do not be surprised to learn that as much as 99 percent of this traffic is not taking the desired action. Pulling in the right traffic and converting it into bona fide leads is a never-ending challenge. Knowing how well (or poorly) youre doing in this area is a big first step.

What percentage of search visitors leave our website within 10 seconds?
This magical statistic, which I like to refer to as short visit syndrome, obviously relates to all of your web traffic. But focusing on search visitors tells us a couple of things. First, are you pulling in the right search traffic? Second, is your website doing an adequate job of hooking them or giving them what they are searching for? It is not at all uncommon for companies to spend lots of money and resources to drive search traffic, only to have the overwhelming majority leave within 10 seconds.

Which search phrases are we focusing on?
You want to come up on the search engines for the phrases that your best prospects and influencers are likely to type. Youd be surprised at how differently people actually search, compared to how your sales and marketing people think they search. This is because most searches occur in the research and investigation phases of the buying cycle. In fact, more than half of all B2B searches for purchases over $50,000 occur between two and six months before a purchase is ever made. And often, the person doing the searching may not have the technical understanding of your product or service. The key is to consider carefully how your audience searches (there are some great research tools out there) and come up with a list of approximately 20 phrases that become your companys target phrases. These are the phrases that you should measure and focus your resources on.

How often are we appearing for our target phrases?
Too often, a webmaster, marketing manager or even CMO assumes everything is up to par because the company appears at the top of Google for their company name or some extremely specific, non-competitive phrase. Its important to know how often you are coming up on Google (as well as other major engines like Yahoo and MSN) for your target phrases as a whole. While it may be more rewarding to focus on where you are coming up, it is more productive to see where you are not currently coming up, and thus missing opportunities.

How often are we appearing compared to the competition?
If its important for you to know which major tradeshows or events your competition attends and exhibits at, wouldnt it make sense to know how often your competition is being found on the search engines compared to you? After all, the Internet and search engines have become the largest, most prolific tradeshow on earth.

Tying It All Together With The Big Picture
Obviously, there are other and even more important things that a CMO would want to know about an Birmingham SEO effort– number of opportunities generated, cost per opportunity, revenue produced, etc. Many executives assume that someone is tracking this information and reporting on it. But more than likely, no one is. Beginning to capture and act upon some of the basic points in this article could be the catalyst to help measure the true effectiveness and production of your internet efforts.

All of this data should be readily available to you if your company has developed a prudent search optimization strategy and implemented some basic and widely available tools. If you are not getting this information, you are missing an increasingly important business development medium. Compared to the amount of energy and resources you are currently spending to generate new business, Birmingham SEO may be the most effective and cost-effective way to fill your pipeline.

What is the most effective way to build links for your site

I have seen in many forums that now a days website owners are little confused regarding link building for their site. They are not very sure what link building strategies they should adopt. Not to mention Google and yahoo heavily rely on quality back links. Content optimization is always a factor but these two search engines are heavily relying on volume of links and of course quality of links. A link back from a page where there are hundreds of links would not help you much. At the time of link building most people forget about the importance of link building. A theme based link back is more powerful than 20 non relevant link backs. Some times people reject link exchange request due to lack of pr of the link page. But you should know that relevancy is more important than page rank of a link page. If you get an offer for link exchange then first check if the site is any way related to your business ? If yes then check it’s link page for (a) Number of outgoing links on that page (b) Does that link page has all kind of sites ? (c) Does that page is accessible from home page ? These 3 are must.

We often get questions that our site is new, no one wants to exchange link with us. Yes it’s a big problem for any webmaster. But think if you propose a link from some of your other websites to the webmaster then he’ll certainly exchange link with you. But what if you don’t have any other site, then how you can do one way link building ? Many Bristol SEO companies, including us provide this kind of service at very reasonable rate, you can hire those companies. Let’s get back to the topic. There are thousands of sites for any category of sites you have. If you start gathering a list of relevant sites through search engine you’ll get bogus data/ search results after you cross page 20 or more. So it’s not a solution to gather sites from search engines. You should follow your competitors link backs and then approach relevant ones for link request. How you’ll find link backs list of your competitors ? it’s very simple just use linkdomain:www.yourcompetitorurl.com in yahoo search to find link backs of that site. Then sort relevant ones for your site and then email those sites such a way that they should feel interested to your proposal. You should know here that One way links are many times more effective than reciprocal link building. So if you have other relevant site then you can use that site to propose a link exchange to your relevant sites. If you don’t have any other site to propose link back then you can always use directory submission, Blog submission join forums to get some links to your domain.

Hard problem what anybody face at the time of link exchange if you don’t have page rank on your proposed link page. 80% link requests get trashed because of “no pr” or “low pr’. After directory submission, Blog submission wait for next Google PR update. You’ll surely get pr 3-4 if you have 100-150 link backs. Now when you have good Pr then start link building for your site. If you are going to propose a well established site be sure you linked back the site first. Otherwise they may reject your proposal. The process I’m discussing here is actually 3 way – for your site A you are proposing a link back to site B from your site C. So this is 3 way link building. This kind of link building is hard to get detected by search engines because they can’t find a clue. But remember you should host your site C on a different server with different ip. For this different server and ip factor search engines can’t detect the link.

But here is a big question – is it completely valueless if we do reciprocal link building ? NO it’s not. reciprocal link building has value but not as one way. Search engines now understand that both sites have mutually agree to show each others link to gain link popularity. But in case of one way it can’t trace a link back. That’s why it gives more value to those one way links. Why one way links are important ? Think of a situation : can you ask Google.com or yahoo.com to place your link on their home page ? No, if you even do they’ll not place your link. But many web sites place a link of google/ yahoo/ msn on their page. That creates the one way link for those domains. They are doing nothing to get a link back. When a site continues to get more and more one way links then search engines also start to think that the domain must be important so other sites are linking back. I would suggest you do mixture of everything. 1) Do one way link building 2) submit your site to free and paid directories 3) Make your own Blog and submit it to Blog directories 4) Use article submission.

Local Search Marketing provides you, the business owner, with the most targeted and cost effective customer acquisition opportunity.

Your customers are more and more often searching for businesses like yours on the Internet. Studies show that these customers have a serious buying intent. As a local business (online or off) you need to figure out how to cost effectively reach out to these Local customers and start the business relationship before your competition does.

Why should local search marketing be important to your business? The Kelsey research group found:

74% of households use the Internet as an information source when shopping locally.

Approximately 45% of local searches had a buying intent.

The percentage of respondents who used yellow page directories decreased from 75% to 62%. (If you have a yellow page ad, it is time to consider buying a smaller ad and shifting your marketing dollars to the Internet.)

As local business owners you need to take action now. You need to keep your existing customers, and gain new customers, so you need to be found where they are searching. Local Search Marketing is where your future clients and customers will come from.

So where do you start?

Most likely your customers will have a default setting on their computers and this will be set to one of these sites for search; Google, Yahoo, MSN or AOL. These search engines all index web pages and have some form of paid advertising referred to as Pay Per Click. This is fine if you have a website but what about many small and local businesses that have little or no web presence at all? And even if you do have a website, does it show up in the search engines above?

Okay, so what other choices have you got?

There are those folks, you know whom I am talking about, who will place you not only in a hard copy directory but also have services online. The challenge is in what the financial cost is, BIG, but hey, they have been around a long time and have deep pockets. The other issue is that they often advertise in the search engines and you will find them there BUT if you follow the link to them, you need to do your search all over again! What a pain.

There are other commercial “local search engines” and some of these are good value but many are not comprehensive. If there are only a few thousand businesses in a local directory most users will leave given the limited amount of content.

So what you need to do is use a search engine like Google and search for “local search directory”, make sure you limit your search to the country youre in. The results include Yahoo local search and a number of local directories. You should check these out and see what it takes to participate in the directories that make the first page of the Google search. By doing so, youll be able to get a feel for how they work and what is needed for you to get listed competitively

What is basic Leeds SEO and how does one go about it?

Leeds SEO is the short way to say Search Engine Optimization. It is the practice of trying to get better rankings in Google, Yahoo! and MSN. Those three are known as the big three because nearly all searchers use one of them, so it is the most profitable for you to try to optimize for them.

Americans conducted 7.4 billion searches online in May, up 12 percent from April. Google Sites registered the most search queries performed with 3.3 billion, followed by Yahoo! Sites (2.1 billion), MSN-Microsoft (963 million) – Comscore

Search engines take into account many things in your website, optimizing those is called on-page optimization, everything that isnt your website is off-page optimization. Now, while the exact ranking formulae are secret, this is what is widely believed as simple Leeds SEO.

First, we want to improve on-page optimization. So we have to pick keywords. There are a variety of tools you can search for which will give you lists of keywords that are usable.

Now you have your keywords. So you now have to see what the top 10 people are doing for them (warning: basic html and math needed ahead). Go to the top person on the most important keyword you have, on google. As an example, well use the keywords free downloads, and Ill do the math with you.

The number one website is download.com, so lets analyze this top website.

Keyword density is the measure of how many times a keyword appears compared to the rest of the text in that area. The areas include: title, meta keywords, meta description, plain content (text), h1, h2, h3, bold, italics, underlined and domain name.

Lets do some of the math for download.com Their title is: Reviews and free downloads at download.com First we ignore any common word, like and, the, at etc. So we have: Reviews free downloads download.com So, free downloads takes up 14 characters out of 35, or 40%. In the meta description tag, its 14/272 = 5.14%, so go on and on through the list, keeping it in an excel. After youve done the top 10 in google, go to the top 10 in yahoo and msn, ignoring the repeats and do it again. Now, take the average. For the title, lets say my average was 15%. I wanna try to have a percentage close to that. Too much, and I might get penalized, too little and It wont help.

Thats the basic on-site Leeds SEO. Matching keyword density on the site. Off-site Leeds SEO is everything that is not on your site, mainly getting links for the beginner. The kind of links you want are links from a relevant website that has few other links to other sites. Ways to get these: Submit to directories and reciprocal linking. Submit your site to directories. You can find many lists of them on google. Reciprocal linking is trading links, or in effect, Ill link to you if you link to me. The best way to get one is to go to a person whos site is close in topic with yours, find their email and send a personal one.

_______________
Dear (contact info, or Webmaster)
I was looking at your site and I really liked (thing on their site) about it. (comment about site). I have placed a link to you at (URL of link you place to them) and would appreciate if youd link back.

Regards,
(name)
(your site url)
_______________
Yes, you have to do this manually, yes, it will help you, and yes, you have to link first. Youre the one asking for a link, so you have to show them you mean it.

Do that for all the top websites in your keywords, and keep doing it. The more you get links, the higher youll be in the rankings. You can find the number your competitors have by going to MSN search and typing in Link:download.com for my example. It showed that there were 692,811 links to download.com Better get to work.

The Art Of Selecting Keywords For Your Small Business Website

One of the most important aspects of search engine optimization (Bristol SEO) is the proper selection of keywords or key phrases. Keywords are the terms that searchers enter when using search engines like Google or Yahoo. For instance, a user looking for someone to help them build a small business website might enter terms like website design or small business website into the search box. The search engines use those terms to find relevant web pages.

What makes a page relevant to any particular search is the topic of another discussion, but it is clear that the presence of related keywords on a webpage create a high degree of relevance. So in the search for help building a small business website, search engines will be looking for web pages that contain the specific search terms as well as other information that is relevant to the same term.

Selecting the proper keywords for your website is crucial to making sure your pages are returned when searchers are looking for the products, services or information you are providing. While there is certainly a lot of information available about how to select keywords, in reality, keyword selection is as much art as it is science. It is a mix of ratios, search probabilities and good detective work to figure out what searches will be looking for, and how the search engines will relate you webpage to their searches.

In general, you can think of keywords as mini ads for your website. Make you ads to generic and searches, and search engines, may overlook the specific thing they are searching for. You can think of keywords as falling into three basic categories: Niche, Primary and Secondary.

Niche keywords are very specific and may result in a low volume of searches but a higher listing in search results. For instance, a site that sells Bristol SEO services may focus on the keyword phrase increase ExactSeek page rank. For searchers who are knowledgeable enough to understand this term and are targeting the ExactSeek search engine there is a high chance your site will show up in a search for Increase my page rank on ExactSeek. However, there will be less people searching for this phrase then say, get better search engine rankings or get better search results on Yahoo. The up side with niche keywords is that there is less competition for the keyword.

Primary keywords are those that appear to be a good balance between volume of search and competitive use. These are the words you should consider focusing your Bristol SEO efforts on. These words have good amounts of search volume because they are relatively generic, however they are a good match for your websites content. These keywords do have competitors, but there is likely enough search volume to generate traffic for your site. A page optimized on the keyword non-profit website design would be relevant to a good number of related searches but would have less competition than a page optimized for website design.

Secondary keywords provide a good volume of searches but have a higher level of competitors. An example is website design. While there are lots of people searching for website design there are millions and millions of competitors. Secondary keywords should not be ignored because of the potential volume, however, trying to optimize for such a generic term without other primary or niche keywords will likely not lead to much traffic.

In summary, ideal keywords receive a reasonable number of searches in major or niche search engines, are relevant to your sites content and are not heavily used by competitors. Keywords that have below average search volumes still may be excellent choices because they may be very relevant to your specific content and have limited competitors. Select multiple keywords for your site and consider using unique keywords for each page if the content is different.

If you are a webmaster you will have undoubtedly heard of all the hype going on about one way and reciprocal links as a way of ranking higher in the search engines.

The Search Engine Optimization (Liverpool SEO) industry is currently one of the most spectacular and dynamic entities that dominate the online economy, and the truth is that every web owner should keep an eye open for the trends that characterize Liverpool SEO.

Reciprocal linking is and always has been one of the top web promotion methods.

The idea behind reciprocal links is simple: one webmaster places a link to a different website and, in return, that website also places a link back. This helps both websites as visitors from one will also go to the other and vice versa.

However, there are bigger stakes here the search engines rank websites on several factors, but one of the most important concerns the number and quality of back links of your website. If you get hundreds of links from established websites that are also related to the topic of your own website, chances are your search engine placement will be excellent.

Pleasing the three main search engines

The power of reciprocal links is huge, as it is one of the most effective ways to get Google, Yahoo and MSN to favor your site. While you know, as a webmaster, that high quality content and good linking are the best keys to long lasting success, chances are you dont like to spend hours and hours carrying out manual link exchanges.

This is why there are tens of thousands of amazing websites out there that are barely known by a few people their webmasters are simply overwhelmed by the idea of exchanging the necessary number of links to rank high on Google, Yahoo and MSN.

While there is no set number of links that you need in order to have your pages displayed in the top 10 results, you will most likely need hundreds or thousands of links.

Automating the process

In order to address the needs of webmasters who would love to promote their websites but simply dont have the time or energy to carry out hundreds of manual link exchanges, many web entrepreneurs have designed automated link exchange software and websites.

One of the most popular and innovative ways of dealing with link exchanges is through automated directories. Not only will these link exchange directories facilitate the link exchange process by offering other webmasters a fast and easy way to performing the exchange, but they also offer excellent link management systems. A great linking directory you may want to consider is:

o http://www.MyLinkMachine.com

Veteran Internet marketers will tell you that keeping track of active and broken links is almost as important as acquiring them in the first place, so the tools that come with such directories are real time savers. The automated link directory approach has several other benefits, such as the fact that you can categorize the reciprocal links, offering a better structure for both link partners and website visitors.

When you create an AdWords campaign you have a choice as to whether you want your ads to appear on Googles network of content sites. These are sites that have signed up for Googles Adsense program, which allows them to display AdWords ads on their pages. Generally speaking, this is not very targeted traffic. Google tries to display your ad on pages with relevant content, and it does a pretty good job of it. Nonetheless, I personally do not like this traffic, and I will tell you why.

When marketing on the Internet, the sooner your ad is displayed to your prospect, the greater your chance of making a sale. This is the reason why search engine traffic performs so well. Most surfers initiate their Internet activity at a search engine. Indeed, many have a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or MSN set as their home page. In other words, it is the first thing they see when they log onto the Internet.

Lets take a closer look at the chain of events. A surfer logs onto the Internet because she wants to find something. She goes to Google and enters her search and among the results she sees your ad. It catches her attention and she clicks through to your site. Since you are offering exactly what she is looking for, she is turned into a customer and you make a sale. This scenario happened the way it did because we understand the virtues of targeted traffic, but it also happened because we were the first to satisfy the surfers needs.

Now, say the surfer has been online for some time and has been surfing from one site to another, looking around and possibly doing research. This surfer may be frustrated because she has not found what she wants, and is therefore in a negative mindset. What is more likely, however, is that this surfer has turned into a window shopper. Either way, since this surfer has been online for some time now, the result is she will be harder to convert into a sale.

When your site is shown on content sites it is being displayed to surfers who have often been online for a longer period of time and are generally not as receptive to your message. Add to this the fact that your ad will not be as targeted and your chances of converting the surfer are even less.

What we want is highly targeted traffic and we want that traffic to be receptive to our message. As that traffic becomes more and more diluted, its value diminishes as well.

One strategy that can be used with content targeting is to create a separate campaign for it. In this campaign all bids would be as low as possible, i.e. 5 cents. In this way you can display your ad on content sites, but the cost would be more in line with the traffics value. Keep in mind also that there is greater chance of click fraud when advertising on content sites, which is another good reason to keep bids as low as possible.

Google recently added a feature where you can bid separately on your content network ads, which allows you to bid lower on your content network ads without having to setup another campaign. This is useful and can be a good solution. I still prefer to create a separate campaign for content network advertising, however. A separate campaign allows for greater organization and analysis. This choice is one of personal preference, though, and you should use whichever option you feel more comfortable with.

In the end, you should be skeptical about content targeting, as the traffic quality will not be the same as the pure search engine traffic. If you really want the extra traffic, then make sure you bid separately for your content site campaign, keeping your bids as low as possible. You should also keep a close eye on your stats to make sure you are not paying for any fraudulent clicks. Good luck.
