<p>So you want to make money with Google Adsense? I don&#8217;t blame you, who doesn&#8217;t want residual income! This article will show you how to better optimize Google Adsense to make more money from your web site(s)&#8230;</p>

<p>First and foremost is: Positioning</p>
<p>Where you position your Adsense link boxes and banner ads is extremely important. Trying to make money from the bottom of your pages within your website just won&#8217;t cut it. You need to add your Adsense links right in the heart of your template or right in the heart of your content. I would personally suggest both actually.</p>
<p>Adding Adsense in the heart of your template:</p>
<p>Link Units:</p>
<p>Since the introduction of Google Adsense &#8220;link units&#8221;, we can now add what looks like a &#8220;menu system&#8221; to compliment our menu system within our website. This is HUGE. Have you ever just clicked on a website and kept clicking on the menu links? I know we all have. By adding a &#8220;Google link units&#8221; to your menu, you will get more clicks than you thought possible. Try adding the link units near the top for better performance and try creating your link units to match the color of your menu system in place. Once in a while I find myself clicking on a menu link unit without even realizing it which in turn gives more money to the website owner.</p>
<p>Leaderboards &#038; Skyscrapers:</p>
<p>These may very well be your &#8220;bread &#038; butter&#8221;. I only say this because of the sheer size of these ads units. The best place to add these ad units is obvious; Straight across the very top of your website (leaderboards), and straight down the side of your template (skyscrapers). Anywhere else may not look proper within your template and may look unprofessional.</p>
<p>Square &#038; Rectangle Ad Units:</p>
<p>These are great to compliment the mass amount of content within your website and also within your recommended resources. You want to compliment your content, you don&#8217;t want Adsense to BE your content because this will look poor on your part. However, don&#8217;t forget that many of your visitors are also used to seeing Adsense within a website, and need a good reason to click on them.</p>

<p>Within your Adsense manager, you have the option of using the &#8220;Competition Filter&#8221; which allows us to remove certain websites from the ads being displayed regularly. This is going to be an on-going optimization task in the future. Without filtering the ads being displayed within your website, you might find yourself with ads unrelated to your industry and possibly some ads that have a negative effect within your site.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t remove all the unwanted ads being displayed on your website, you might end up hurting your Adsense performance online. The more targeted you can get your Google Adsense ads to display on each page, the better your chances at being able to make more money. Try to take a moment every week to study the ads being displayed on your website.</p>
<p>Open up a note pad, or word document and record all the websites you don&#8217;t want to be displayed anymore. Add these sites to your &#8220;filter list&#8221; within your Adsense account.</p>

Adding anything after or before the url will only prevent the company from displaying one of their many ads like so (www.site.com/ads/1.html). <p>Should you add Adsense to your website?</p>
<p>If you own a small company that has a brochure type website that gets maybe 50-100 visitors a day, I recommend NOT adding Adsense to your site. It will never make enough money with that kind of traffic. Remember: Your Adsense campaign needs to make over $100 to get paid out.</p>
<p>If your company receives around 500-1000+ visitors a day, you can now start considering to make money through Google. Adsense is all about numbers. Play the numbers to make more money. <p>To top all that off, you can add Google search within your site to give visitors a search function for your content and to allow people to also click on your Adsense program. Please note that for Google search to work, your website and all of its content pages must already be indexed by Google. <p>In a fluke, I was able to notice something about the way Google indexes content from web directories. Excluding your template, the most important line of code is the first title you add to your main body.</p>
<p>Search through Google and see for yourself!</p>
<p>Try searching for &#8220;something&#8221; in &#8220;yourcity&#8221;,&#8221;province/state&#8221; and look for a web business directory that you recognize. Once you find a directory, take a good look at the description of that particular listing (not the title). It may be a good idea to write it down. Once complete, click on the &#8220;cache&#8221; of that page within Google to highlight the content and view the web directory page.</p>
<p>9 out of 10 times the description of your website listing within Google is partly taken from the first line of code you have within your main body of content (excluding your header, footer, &#038; sidebar). You will notice that this only applies for a web directory. Any personal or business related website gets indexed differently. If you take a look at the Google directory, we find the same thing: Take a look here: http://www.google.com/dirhp?hl=en</p>
<p>Browse to any sub-category and look at the first line of text. You will find that the title within the main body of content before anything else, is within an H1 tag.</p>
<p>H1 tags &#038; H2 tags are nothing new to the development community but, there may still be many directories online that can increase their search engine rankings by changing a few things.</p>

In the process of organizing your massive directory you were faced with a problem on how to allow people to browse your website and how to let search engines browse through your categories with ease. <p>The problem with this alphabetical solution (I am also guilty as charged) is that we tend to add this development solution to the top of our page so that our visitors and possibly search engines can find these extra categories easily. << This is probably hurting your results in many ways.</p>
<p>1) Your alphabetical solution is probably necessary but instead, you should add it a little lower below some more important page specific content.</p>
<p>2) No matter where you add your ABC&#8217;s, search engines will find them anyway.</p>
<p>3) You don&#8217;t want 10,000 pages to be indexed with a description that goes&#8230; abcdefg&#8230;</p>
<p>The Solution:</p>
<p>If you own a directory and you are faced with this problem, let&#8217;s get our development hats on and switch a couple of things around. Try adding the main &#8220;topic&#8221; description to the top of your main body of content and create this description within one of these tags: H1,H2,H3,H4, etc.</p>
<p>2nd: Once you have your main title description, try adding more related content to that specific page within &#8220;bold tags&#8221; BEFORE you add your alphabetical solution. As you can see, this can be easily mistaken by many visitors coming to your web directory and probably won&#8217;t help your conversion rate whatsoever.</p>

How and when should I submit my website to Google?</p>
<p>As soon as you register your domain name, submit it to Google! </p>
<p>Even if you havent built your site, or written an copy, or even thought about your content, submit your domain name to Google. In fact, even if you havent fully articulated your business plan and marketing plan, submit your domain name to Google.</p>
<p>Dont wait!</p>
<p>There are two reasons for this. Firstly, getting on the search engines has always taken a long time for a new site. Even assuming you do everything right, it takes months before your site is even indexed, and more months before it starts to rank well. As a rule of thumb, never expect to rank highly within 6 months of submitting your site to Google. </p>
<p>The second reason is a recent phenomenon called Google Sandbox. Many Birmingham SEO experts believe that Google sandboxes new websites. Whenever it detects a new website, it withholds its rightful ranking for a period while it determines whether your site is a genuine, credible, long term site. It does this to discourage the creation of SPAM websites (sites which serve no useful purpose other than to boost the ranking of some other site). </p>
<p>By submitting your domain name to Google as soon as you register it, youre establishing a site history even if the site has no content. By the time youve built your site, written your copy, and developed the rest of your content (and written your business and marketing plans), Google will probably see no need to sandbox you. </p>
<p>If you wait until launch day to submit your site, youll spend a month or two (maybe more) sitting in the sandbox watching potential customers spend their money elsewhere. </p>
<p>How to submit your site to Google</p>
<p>Dont waste money by paying someone else to submit your site to Google. Its easy!</p>
<p>Simply go to http://www.google.com.au/addurl.html,  enter your URL (domain name) and a few comments or keywords to describe your site. Then click Submit. Thats all there is to it. You only have to do it once, and only for your top level page (i.e. Home page).</p>
<p>Googles robots will then crawl your website the next time theyre out and about. Of course, they dont guarantee that youll be included in their results.</p>
<p>IMPORTANT: As mentioned above, it takes quite a while for your site to appear in the search engines. This is partly because the search engines are big and slow  especially when it comes to new sites. It will take a minimum of 6-8 weeks before your site is indexed.</p>
<p>How to submit your site to other search engines</p>
<p>There are hundreds of search engines on the Internet. Its a lucrative business, after all! But dont panic; studies suggest that the top 11 search engines account for about 90% of web traffic. In other words, if you have the top 11 covered, theres no need to submit to the rest.</p>
<p>Whats more, at the time of writing, most of the top 11 dont actually accept submissions. The only ones that do are Google (described above), Yahoo, and MSN. Heres a list of the available submit pages. </p>

Theoretically, you dont actually need to submit your site to Google either because its always on the lookout for new content and will eventually find your site of its own accord. Google actually states, Given the large number of sites submitting URLs, it&#8217;s likely your pages will be found in an automatic crawl before they make it into our index through the URL submission form. (Google Information for Webmasters &#8211; http://www.google.com.au/webmasters/1.html#A1) Personally, I wouldnt like to take the risk.)</p>
<p>Having said that, it certainly doesnt hurt to submit your site to other search engines (especially if you havent developed any content for it yet).</p>

<p>Google&#8230; one of the Internets MOST powerful search engines recently announced a new FREE service that makes it easier for you to improve your websites coverage within Googles index through its NEW collaborative crawling system.</p>
<p>On the down side though, Google does not &#8216;Guarantee&#8217; immediate inclusion, But, is still good news for those of you who have just finished building a website and are ready to submit to the top search engines.</p>
<p>So, what&#8217;s this NEW service called that Google just released?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s called &#8220;Google Sitemaps&#8221;.</p>
<p>The real cool thing about &#8220;Google Sitemaps&#8221; IS it accepts RSS(Real Simple Syndication) and Atom feeds with the .XML extension as one of the accepted formats for submitting your websites Sitemap for inclusion in Googles index.</p>
<p>This is just one of the four formats Google accepts and is the one that I&#8217;m going to use for the rest of this article to show you how to generate your own .XML sitemap of your website for inclusion in Google.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s real easy to do so don&#8217;t worry about it being to complicated.</p>
<p>So, with that said, lets go to Step #1.</p>
<p>Step #1. Sign up for &#8220;Google Sitemaps&#8221;.</p>
<p>This step is easy, simply follow the link provide below and sign up for a Free account. It should only take you a few minutes to do, then once your done, come back here and go to Step #2.</p>
<p>Go to: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/login</p>
<p>Step #2. Generate your .XML sitemap.</p>
<p>In this step your going to generate a .XML sitemap for your website using a Free online sitemap generator.</p>
<p>This Free online generator will build you a sitemap up to 500 pages. If you have a larger website with thousands of webpages you&#8217;ll have to use a paid service and/or software to generate yours.</p>
<p>Go to: http://www.xml-sitemaps.com</p>
<p>Enter your required information on the form provided.</p>
<p>Step #3. Upload your generated .XML sitemap to your server.</p>
<p>Once your generated sitemap is finished(your generated .XML file should be called site.xml.gz) it&#8217;s now time to upload it to your server using your FTP(File Transfer Protocol) program.</p>
<p>This is very important that you do this before submitting it to Google Sitemaps for inclusion.</p>
<p>Step #4. Submit your NEW .XML sitemap to &#8220;Google Sitemaps&#8221;.</p>
<p>Now that you have generated your &#8220;Sitemap&#8221; for your website and uploaded it to your server all you have to do now is to go to &#8220;Google Sitemaps&#8221; and submit your sitemap URL.</p>
<p>(ex. http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.gz)</p>
<p>That&#8217;s it.</p>
<p>Now, depending on Google, your sitemap should get downloaded within the next 24 hours, so be sure to check and see that it did and that there wasn&#8217;t any problems or errors.</p>
<p>Also, your going to want to be able to track your indexed webpages within the search engines, especially Google, so you can see how things are going, so I&#8217;ll leave you with one last resource that will do this for you.</p>

<p>Once you&#8217;ve entered your &#8220;Key Words &#038; Phrases&#8221; now you&#8217;re going to be asked to enter the maximum amount of money you want to pay every time someone clicks on your ad.</p>
<p>Ex. If someone searches &#8220;Legal Services&#8221;, you enter that you will pay a maximum of 0.07cts per click.</p>
<p>This will give you a pre-qualified potential client for 0.07cts.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s move on a little now..</p>
<p>Assuming that your ad is all set up and already on the way. Now you can return to Google, log into your account and see how your &#8220;Key Words &#038; Key Phrases&#8221; are performing with your campaign.</p>

<p>Now you will get a much better understanding at what your potential clients are searching for and what they are actually clicking on.</p>
<p>KEY NOTE: Try to experiment with this as much as possible and as quickly as possible so you can really begin your Pay Per Click Search Engine Marketing.</p>

<p>Now that you have your predetermined key words of phrases you want to use, you can now start looking into pay per click campaigns.
